Saartjie Baartman
The treatment of Saartjie Baartman mentally, physically, sexually and emotionally is unacceptable. Saartjie Baartman was tricked to come to Europe and was the first reported black women sex symbol. Her treatment was in no way humane. Although she was paid, Saartjie Baartman was a slave. She was a circus act. It is ridiculous the way she was treated. However, this begs a bigger question how does her experience still effect black women today? Today, women in general are valued for looks. Each race of women strive to look like that other. White women tanning with big lips, black women with straightened black hair and weave and a strive for small waist are all way to which seemingly each race becomes one race. The race of perfection although no one can be perfect and no is. The idea of sexy and beauty is different for everyone. Black women are particularly left out of marriage and a certain level of companionship. Some would say because of their attitude, if that were the case why are so many men eager to figure out what a black woman can do in the bedroom? Men knowing the chance of pregnancy and the rates of single mothers speak to one conclusion. We are not far from our history in many ways. Are we all modernized slaves? Statistically, black women are the most economically deprived. I would think for black women freedom and free will is an illusion. Used to be it was a dream of something that could be felt, seen, or touch. Today, black women as everyone freedom if you are wealthy enough to buy it. These issues of race and gender are deeply indoctrinated in our society and families. Black being at the very bottom of respect. Black women retaliate not by fighting against outside forces, but with each other setting them farther and farther down the claims for dignity and respect. Black women have resorted to sex in exchange for favors for a long time. When you have a child and cannot feed her you resolve to anything putting black women in the same predicament they were in as slaves. So how is this any different from Saartjie Baartman. People can say they feel bad for what happened to her all day, but allowing the things that are happening to day are the same thing. Do not say sorry and feel bad fix it.
